MidJourney Vary Region: How to Modify Part of Your Image?

MidJourney introduced one of the most anticipated updates of all time, and it’s called Vary Region. Basically, it’s a way to edit your images after MidJourney creates them.

You can now modify specific portions of an image by selecting them and even add new elements using just text prompts.

What is MidJourney Vary Region?

MidJourney Vary Region is a feature that allows you to edit specific parts of an image generated by MidJourney.

Using simple text prompts, you can:

  • Modify a selected area (e.g., change colors, outfits, objects).
  • Add new elements to a specific part of the image.
  • Keep the rest of the image unchanged while altering only the selected region.

This is done inside Discord, where MidJourney runs. After generating and upscaling an image, you can select the “Vary (Region)” option, choose an area using a rectangular or lasso tool, enter your new prompt, and get variations based on that change.

How to use MidJourney Vary Region?

Step 1: Generate an Image in MidJourney

First, you need an image to work with. Here’s how I created mine:

MidJourney Vary Region
  • I opened Discord (where MidJourney operates).
  • Typed /imagine followed by my prompt:
MidJourney Vary Region

MidJourney generated four variations of this prompt.

Step 2: Upscale Your Chosen Image

From the four options, I selected the one I liked best (in my case, the third image). To upscale it:

  • I pressed U3 (Upscale option for image 3).
  • After upscaling, the image appeared with new options, including Vary Region.

Step 3: Accessing the Editing Window

Once you upscale an image, you’ll see several options:

  • Zoom Out: Expands the image in different sizes.
  • Pan: Moves the image left, right, up, or down.
  • Vary (Subtle/Strong): Slightly modifies the image with a new prompt.
  • Vary Region: Lets you edit specific parts of the image.

I clicked Vary Region, which opened a new editing window.

Step 4: Selecting an Area to Modify

Inside the editing window, you have two selection tools:

  1. Rectangular Selection:
  • Click and drag to select a box-shaped area.
  • Useful for broad selections.
  1. Lasso Tool:
  • Allows freehand selection.
  • Great for precise edits (e.g., selecting a dress, sunglasses, etc.).

Example: Changing the Dress

  • I used the Lasso Tool to select the polka dot dress.
  • In the prompt box, I typed: “red dress” (this ensures only the selected area changes).
  • Pressed the arrow button to submit.

Result:

  • MidJourney generated four new versions of the image—everything stayed the same except the dress, which was now red.
  • If I liked one variation, I could further refine it by selecting V1, V2, V3, or V4 for additional tweaks.

Adding New Elements to an Image

Step 5: Creating a New Scene

To demonstrate adding objects, I generated a new image:

  • Prompt: “White sandy beach.”
  • MidJourney gave me four variations.
  • I selected the fourth one (U4) and upscaled it.

Step 6: Using Vary Region to Add Objects

After upscaling, I clicked Vary Region again.

Example: Adding a sword

  • I used the Lasso Tool to select an area of the water.
  • Typed: “sword” (no extra details, just to see what MidJourney would generate).
  • Pressed the arrow button to submit.

Result:

  • Four different boat variations appeared in the selected area.
  • I liked the third option (V3) and upscaled it.

Additional Tips for Better Edits

Be Specific with Prompts:

If you want precise changes (e.g., “wooden fishing boat with a blue sail”), describe it in detail.

Experiment with Different Selections:

Try modifying different parts (e.g., changing the house, sky, or adding clouds).

Use Vary (Subtle/Strong) for Minor Adjustments:

If you only want slight refinements, this option helps without full re-editing.

Final Thoughts

The Vary Region tool is incredibly powerful for making targeted edits.

  • Change clothing in a portrait.
  • Add objects to a landscape.
  • Modify colors or textures in specific areas.

This feature gives you full control over your MidJourney creations.
